Per Bratland Obituary (February 13, 1932 – May 26, 2025)

Per Bratland of Bergen, Norway, known for his quick wit and ability to charm everyone he encountered, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, with family at his side at his home in Salisbury, Vermont.

He was born on February 13, 1932, to the late Ole and Birgit Bratland in Laksevåg, Norway, the second son of four children. Growing up in Bergen in the 1940s included rationed provisions, Nazi occupation, and Allied bombings due to the Nazi submarines harbored nearby. It also fostered a close-knit family, ancient traditions, and athletics. Per enjoyed the competitive opportunities of the local athletic center, Laksevåg Turn og Idrettslag, where he especially loved playing soccer. There he formed lifelong friendships and met his wife, Aase Skar.

In 1964, seeking a better life for their young family, Per and Aase and their two young children moved to the U.S. for Per’s education. Per earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines. The family decided to settle in Peabody, Massachusetts.

Per is survived by his brother Ole and wife Gunn of Bergen Norway, son Stein and wife Carla of Denton, TX, daughter Tone of Salisbury, VT, grandchildren Brigit, Erik, and Fiona, in-laws Bjorn and Wenke Skar of Bergen Norway, and many devoted nieces and nephews in Norway and Denmark.

The family will celebrate Per’s long life in a private service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity closest to your heart.
