Michael Scott Goodspeed

GOSHEN: Michael Scott Goodspeed, affectionately known as Woody, age 64 passed away peacefully with family by his side on June 5, 2026 at his home in Goshen.  Mike had been living with advanced kidney cancer for just over a year.

Mike was born in Middlebury, VT on April 14, 1962.  He was the son of Roderick and Judith (Forguites) Goodspeed.   He grew up in Whiting and at age 7 his family moved to Forest Dale.  Mike attended Otter Valley Union High, graduated from class of 1980.  For many years he played with the school band and was a member of the ice hockey team.

His working career began with New England Woodcraft where he worked for 8 years.  Mike then founded his own business Goodspeed Cabinetry, specializing in fine custom-made woodworking furnishings and cabinetry.  He was well known for the quality of his craftsmanship and his graciousness with customers.

In his earlier years he enjoyed skiing locally, out west and in Europe with friends and family.  He enjoyed speed skating and inline skating, hiking and camping, and kayaking in his custom-built wooden boats. He had a love of music and listening to live bands and years ago enjoyed jamming with friends.  Mike was a drummer and during his months of having cancer his therapy was playing his drums which made him feel free! Mike had a quiet, caring personality and thoroughly enjoyed intimate conversations with family and friends.  He enjoyed it when friends would stop by his shop or in Goshen to visit. He had a wonderful, dry sense of humor and his love of coffee and donuts was well known. Mike loved his life in Goshen with his wife and golden retrievers, Tess and Piper and the memories they shared.

 Mike is survived by his wife of 18 years, Polly Gibson Goodspeed; mother, Judy Goodspeed of Forest Dale; sister, Terri Laughlin of Indianapolis; niece, Kayla Malloy (husband Justin and their girls Chloe and Teagan who enjoyed their times spent in Goshen, sledding, and being down by the pond) of Scotia, NY; and nephew, Brett Laughlin (children Annabelle, Eli and Michael) of Indianapolis.  Additionally, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his father Rod Goodspeed.

A Celebration of Mike’s life will be later this summer.  Details will be published at a later date.  There will be a private burial. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Brandon Area Rescue Squad or Rutland County Humane Society.
