BRANDON:
John Robert Dolan, age 67, died May 18, 2026, at his home in Brandon.
John was born in Alameda, California on January 27, 1959. He was the son of John and Bertha (Williams) Dolan. He and his family moved to Vermont in 1971 and he graduated from Mount Abraham Union High School in 1976. He continued his education at Castleton State College where he met the love of his life, Eileen Wheeler, whom he married in 1979. John began his career in journalism as a freelance writer for the Rutland Herald in which he would often arrive early at the scene of real-time events thanks to his trusty police scanner. He also provided informed, intelligent and thoughtful op-ed pieces and designed challenging and artistic cross-word puzzles in which he was able to showcase his natural artistic abilities. In 2023 John retired as editor from the Rutland Herald following more than 40 years of service. John loved traveling with Eileen, playing the guitar and was an avid reader. He was also a much-loved big brother and devoted son and husband to his mother and wife.
He is survived by his siblings Mary Dolan, Amy Greiner, David Dolan, Joseph Dolan Carrie Noyes, and Jason Dolan; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents and his wife Eileen Dolan.
The memorial service “In Celebration of His Life” will take place on May 30, 2026, at 12 noon, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. Rev. Maurice Moreau, pastor of Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church will officiate. Following the ceremony the family will receive friends, at Brandon American Legion Post, for a time of remembrance.
A private burial will take place, at a later date.
Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made in John's memory to the Rutland Herald or your local newspaper, in support of his loved profession.
