Jeffrey Wayne Burt
November 20, 1958 - May 01, 2024
Jeff left this earth for greener acres on May 01, 2024. Although his sudden death has caught us off guard, we know that death is a part of life – it is guaranteed and unavoidable; but it is the in between that matters. Jeff showed us all what it was like to live.
At a young age, Jeff’s love and desire for farming, fast cars, and family was evident. He grew up on the family farm in Sudbury, VT with his parents, Edson & Janice Burt. In his early teenage years, after graduating from Otter Valley in 1977, he made the decision to work full-time at the farm and to pour his love and life into it. There is not a square inch of the property that he could not describe to you, with great detail. An avid outdoorsman, hunter and true farmer who loved the farm more than life itself. He never met a stranger and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone.
Jeff was lucky enough to have 4 siblings. Sharon, Brad, Lisa and Randy. The farm was a family affair where he learned his work ethic, that was unlike any other. He would outwork you twice every day of the week and three times on Sunday. An early riser, Jeff would be the first one to work and the last one to leave.
Jeff never strayed far from the farming lifestyle. He loved logging and went to work with Hummiston family for many years, eventually went back to farming and worked on the Goodrich Farm in Salisbury, VT for 15+ years and most recently for Cream Hill Stock Farm in Shoreham, VT.
He met Jeanne Lamoureux-Wood, married, and had two girls that ignited his world, Tanya Carmichael and Rebecca Burt. The light of his life and the proud father he was, the girls were his shadows learning the ropes the same way he did, outside in the barn. He passed on the farming traditions and let’s just say, the girls can change their own tires, drive the tractor and feed the cows on their own.
From dirt track racing to “alleged” races down Route 30, Jeff lived in the fast lane. He would out-drive you in snow, mud, ice, through a hay field or on the blacktop. His knowledge of motors and anything mechanical was something you learn by doing, not reading about. Rarely did he sit still, but if you sat down with a cup of coffee, you’d hear the stories and wonder if they were real, and I assure, they were 100% real, he did it, it was him.
He had many life-long friends he considered as brothers. He loved to tell stories of their adventures together, arm wrestling, fishing, farming, racing, and hunting. Jeff was an excellent story-teller, with passion and humor and it was evident how much he loved his friends and family.
Jeff has continued to raise cows with his nephew, Jonathan Burt, in recent years as they shared the farm together. Johnny was the son he never had and was never too far behind him. They shared many hobbies and held a special bond.
In his, later and less wild days, Jeff’s grandchildren were his world. Hayden, Aubrey, Raelynn, Jaxon and Kelsey. He also gained a son when Tanya married James Carmichael in 2010. They shared a love of fast cars and fishing. You never ran into Jeff without hearing 5 stories pertaining to them. He enjoyed fishing with the grandchildren, teaching them how to fix things, hunt, and fish, but his favorite of all, was his snack stash. He loved getting their favorite treats and he lit up when they asked “Papa Jeff, do you have a treat?”. He had a certain love to him that was infectious, and he loved his grandchildren beyond measure. They truly meant the world to him.
His humor, larger than life laugh, his charm and wit, will be deeply missed. Like he loved to say, “If you ain’t first – you’re last”, and we hope that you will carry a little piece of Jeff’s legacy on with you and live as fearless as he did. We will leave you with one of his many sayings, “Remember, it’s only illegal if you get caught” – Jeff Burt
Rest in heavenly greener acres, Jeff.
