Betty Ann Gould died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024 in Machias, ME after a long decline in health.

 She was born Betty Ann Knapp July 2, 1933, at Swinington Hill, Leicester, Vermont, daughter of Clayton C. and Helen [Swinington] Knapp. As a girl Betty attended a one room school in Leicester that was settled by her maternal ancestor Joseph Swinington, a Revolutionary War veteran who arrived there in 1790.

In 1950 Betty married Leon “Buck” Gould. They purchased a home in Florence, VT where Buck worked at White Pigment Corp/OMYA.

Buck Gould died in 1984. Betty later married Gilbert R. DeGraff and moved with him to Belfast, ME.

Gilbert died in 2017 and Betty remained in their home there with help from John and Judy Gould until ill health prompted a move to Marshall's Health Care in Machias, ME where she resided until her death.

In addition to her parents Betty was predeceased by her first husband Leon Gould; by two sons, Jeffrey Gould in 1980; William “Bill” Gould in 2020; by her sister Marjorie Knapp Miglorie in 1994; grandson, Richard Griffin in 2007; and her second husband Gilbert R. DeGraff in 2017; son-in-law William “Bub” Hutchins in 2020.

Betty is survived by four daughters: Deborah [Mike] Griffin of Sudbury, VT; Helen Hutchins, Brandon, VT; Evelyn 'Evie” [Harold “Peanut”] Reed of Florence, VT; Marjorie Davis, Brandon, VT.

Two sons: Leon “John” [Judy] Gould of Swanville, ME, Matthew [Gina] Gould of Columbia, KY and a daughter-in-law Ginger Gould of Brandon, VT; a special niece, Barbara Sawtelle; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is also survived by step-children, Donna Oliver; Lawrence DeGraff; William DeGraff; Andrea Friend; June Harden; Jane Harden; Peter DeGraff.

Special friends Steve Moody and the York family also survive.

Betty worked for many years at the Brandon Training School, Brandon, VT and as a cook at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford, VT.

Betty loved viewing sunsets and trips to the ocean where she enjoyed watching seagulls.

The graveside committal service and burial will take place, on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 11 AM, at Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon. Arrangements by Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
