Gail Ashley, age 80, died Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

 

Mrs. Ashley was born in Vergennes on November 5, 1939. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Lillian (Jay) Hier. She grew up in Vergennes where she received her early education. She moved to Pittsford with her family in 1954 and graduated from Pittsford-Barstow High School, class 1957. She furthered her education at the University of Vermont and later earned her degree in accounting from Burdett Business College in Lynn, MA. In her earlier years she had worked at National Grange Insurance Company and later at John Hancock Insurance. She joined the staff of Essex County Bank in Lynn and Peabody, MA. She and her husband retired to Brandon in 2004 moving here from Redding, MA. She was a member of the Pittsford Congregational Church. She loved playing the slot machines and was an avid reader.

 

She is survived by her husband; Paul F. Ashley, Jr of Brandon; whom she married in Pittsford on April 15, 1961; 2 daughters; Jeanne L. Ashley of Georgetown, MA and Joanne L. Ashley of Haverhill, MA, 2 sisters; Marsha Henry of Glen Burnie, MD and Joyce Errecart of Shelburne, 3 brothers; Gary Hier of Winooski, Bruce Hier of Raleigh, NC and Curt Hier of Fair Haven. She was predeceased by her parents, a sister Sally Lyons and a brother Lloyd Hier. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her.

 

The memorial service “In Celebration of Her Life” will be held on Friday, January 31, 2020, at 10 AM, at the Pittsford Congregational Church. Mr. Michael Dwyer will officiate.

 

Following the ceremony, the family will receive friends in the church hall, for a time of remembrance.

 

Friends may pay their respects to the family, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 2-4 PM.

 

A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.

 

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in her memory to; Brandon Free Public Library, 4 Franklin Street, Brandon, VT 05733.
