Merritt F. Wheeler, Jr, age 76, died Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at Rutland Health & Rehabilitation Center.


Mr. Wheeler was born at Proctor Hospital. He grew up on the family farm, where he has lived all his life. He milked Holstein’s, cut fire wood, logged and enjoyed sugaring. In the late 1970’s he worked on the highway department for the Town of Chittenden. When his brother retired as Road Commissioner he was elected to the position. He retired from the town, but continued plowing driveways and run his refuse hauling business.  He enjoyed trout fishing in Furnace Brook, and knew the best fishing holes for fly fishing. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, and playing bingo twice a week.


He is survived by two brothers; Lyle Wheeler and Cleo Wheeler both of Chittenden. Many step-children, nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends also survive him. He was predeceased by his first wife; Ida Chase Wheeler and his second wife; Barbara Wheeler, a sister; Audrey Mussaw and a brother; Elmer Wheeler, Sr.


Respecting his wishes there will be no public funeral service. A private burial will take place, at a later date.


Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory to; the Chittenden First Response or to the Rutland County Humane Society.
