Stanley Murray Johnson

Worcester, Massachusetts - Stanley, age 88, died peacefully with his family at his side on June 16th, at Knollwood Nursing Center in the Briarwood Retirement Community.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Elinor Dunshee Johnson, in 2015.

Stanley leaves his son and daughter-in-law Kenneth & Andrea Johnson of Worcester; his daughter and son-in-law Joanne & John Schmidt of Milford, NH; his grandchildren Emily Finkel & husband Noah; Gregory Johnson & wife Stacey, Matthew Schmidt and wife Hannah, Jonathan Schmidt and wife Lynse, and Kathryn Schmidt.  Stanley took comfort in his great-grandchildren Madeline & Alden Finkel, Gavin & Trenton Schmidt, Thomas Johnson, and Wilhelmina Schmidt.  The last of his generation, Stanley was predeceased by his brother Robert and sisters Dana Foley, Marion Strauss, and Phyllis Falla.

Stanley was born in Waltham, MA to Elmer and Elizabeth (Buckle) Johnson, and was raised in Waltham, Portland, ME, and Bennington, VT.  After graduation from Bennington High School he attended Bryant & Stratton Accounting School in Boston.   Elinor and Stanley met in Bennington at the local soda shop.  Stanley liked to recount that he knew he wanted to marry Elinor on their first date.  He always felt she was the best thing that ever happened to him.

He was proud of his 35 year career, having never taken a sick day, with ExxonMobil (Esso/Humble Oil), the only company he ever worked for.  He began in their accounting department in Boston, progressing to plant operations in Rutland, VT, district sales in Concord, NH, tanker terminal supervisor in New Haven, CT, and marketing sales analyst in Everett and Stoneham, MA.  He was responsible for the first U.S. installation of electronic recording of fuel products off-loaded from tanker ships at the docks of a major tanker terminal, a system now in use at every gas station pump.  After retirement at age 55 Stan and Elinor moved to Tavares, FL for 23 years before coming to Worcester to be near family.

Stanley was a truly kind and gentle soul, a loving husband and family man, a lifetime golfer and sports fan, and a 3rd degree Mason of the Masonic Lodge of Rutland.  An exceptional and resourceful handyman he was happiest planning and executing projects at his summer camp in Vermont, and assisting his children with their projects.  He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Our sincerest thanks to the staff at Knollwood and JHC Hospice for their compassionate care.

A reception will be held at The Birches, Briarwood Retirement Community, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA on Thursday, June 22nd from 3 to 7 PM.  Funeral services will be held at Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home, 26 Franklin St, Brandon, VT on Sunday, June 25th, 11AM.   Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol, VT where he will be laid to rest with his dearly missed wife Elinor.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to JHC Hospice, 629 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.
