Almerinda “Rita” Russo, age 90, died Saturday, February 13, 2016, at her home in Leicester.

 

Mrs. Russo was born in Jamaica, L.I. New York on September 17, 1925. She was the daughter of Alfred and Antoinette (Nunziatta) Buonincontro. She was graduated from Hempstead (NY) High School class of 1943. Following graduation she worked for Republic Air Craft in Farmingdale, NY. November 20, 1948 she married Vincent “Vince” Russo. They made their home in Hempstead, NY and later in Wantagh, NY. They first came to Vermont in 1960, but for work reasons, returned to Connecticut in 1964. They returned to Leicester, Vermont in 1989. Mr. Russo predeceased her November 14, 2007. Rita was also known as the “Avon Lady” for 30 years. She belonged to Middlebury American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit #27 and was a communicant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon.

 

Surviving is 2 daughters; Judith Hanley & her husband Tom of Middlebury and Michele Lee & her husband Jeff of Leicester, 3 sons; Jon Russo & his wife Debbie of Sarasota, FL, James Russo, Sr., & his Fiancé Crystal Sears of Leicester and Maurice Russo & his wife Marie of Richmond, NH, 2 brothers; Salvatore Buonincontro of Hicksville, NY and Ralph Buonincontro of England and a sister, Cecelia Bishop of West Rutland. 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews & cousins also survive her. She was also predeceased by a brother; Vincent Buonincontro.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10 AM, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date, in the family lot, at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

 

Following the ceremony the family will receive friends at Brandon American Legion Post #55, for a time of remembrance.

 

Friends may call at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Friday, February 19, 2016 from 4-7 PM., where a Vigil Service will be conducted at 6 PM.

 

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to; St. Mary’s Catholic Church Restoration Fund, 38 Carver St. Brandon, VT 05733.

 

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
